Electricity

Australia already leads the world in terms of residential solar panels, helped a lot by our high amount of sunshine and expensive mains electricity.

The solar power death spiral will happen one day. It is a case of when, not if. Rooftop solar panels and battery storage are continually coming down in price. Mains electricity is continuing to rise in price. House by house we will be deciding to go solo because it is cheaper. As each house leaves the grid, average household costs rise, inspiring more people to leave the grid – the death spiral.

The rise of electric vehicles could be slow or rapid, nobody really knows. If it is rapid, our grid could face fresh challenges.

We accept that the death spiral is inevitable, and electric vehicles could place a strain on our grid.

We will use feed-in tariffs to balance the increase/decrease in grid use with the needs of those still on the grid.

So for example, if grid use is decreasing and a coal-fired plant is to be decommissioned, then feed-in tariffs can be used to encourage more people to install solar panels, to cover the loss in supply. Or if electric vehicle use causes a strain on grid use, we will use feed-in tariffs to get more people off grid reliance.

There will be no deals struck with grid electricity providers. There will be no bail outs, or pay outs. The providers know that their days are numbered and should have anticipated changes in demand. Plus they stung users by building a gold-plated grid infrastructure, just so they could profit.
